What is Person-Centred Counselling?

According to the British Association for Counselling Professionals (BACP 2018) person-centred counselling is one of the humanistic modalities or approaches. Given the right conditions, a person can reach their full potential and become their true self, which is termed ‘self-actualisation’. 'This actualisation process is innate and accessible to everyone'. See my video in the 'Frequently Asked Questions' section.

The underpinning principles of the person-centred approach are focused on the counsellor being honest, non-judgmental and fully accepting whilst being fully integrated in the relationship, allowing the client to lead and set the pace. I commit to offer these conditions as best as I can during our relationship.

To Help You Achieve Self-Actualisation, I Will Offer:

  • Unconditional positive regard (UPR) – accepting and valuing you.
  • Congruence - being honest and transparent in how I experience your world.
  • Empathic understanding – seeing your viewpoint as if I were you.

Discover Your Own Abilities.

I will help you to realise what resources and support are available to you that you can use to work through your issues, build your self-confidence and appreciate that you always have options. I will treat you as the expert on yourself, as no-one else knows exactly what it’s like to be you.

I will not judge you, no matter what you bring to the session. This helps build a trustworthy relationship in which you can feel free and supported to disclose whatever is troubling you. Eventually it will lead you to discover your own abilities and autonomy, so that you can cope with current and future problems.

What About Anxiety?

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety can feel like a constant, overwhelming presence, affecting how you think, feel, and interact with the world around you. From sleepless nights to persistent worry and avoidance, anxiety often feels like a battle fought alone. It can touch every aspect of life, making daily tasks seem daunting and disrupting your emotional well-being. In a client-centred approach to understanding anxiety, the focus is on you—your experiences, your feelings, and your path to healing. You are not defined by your anxiety, and through compassionate support, you can regain control of your life.

The Life-Altering Impact of Anxiety.

Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. It can be paralysing, impacting your ability to enjoy life, form healthy relationships, and pursue personal goals. For some, anxiety presents as a generalised sense of unease or dread that never seems to go away. Others may experience intense fear or panic in certain situations, such as social gatherings, work settings, or when facing new challenges. The constant sense of danger or uncertainty often takes a toll on self-esteem, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Anxiety affects your mind and body, manifesting in symptoms like rapid heartbeat, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and even physical issues like headaches or digestive problems. Over time, anxiety can become isolating, as it may feel easier to withdraw from situations that trigger fear or discomfort. While the challenges of living with anxiety are very real, it's important to recognise that healing is possible, and it starts with understanding your unique experience and needs.

A client-centred approach to anxiety

A client-centred approach places you at the heart of the healing process. It acknowledges that your experience of anxiety is personal and unique, and it respects your ability to lead the way towards your own recovery. This approach emphasises empathy, unconditional positive regard, and creating a safe space where you feel understood, valued, and empowered to share your feelings without judgment.

Rather than focusing solely on symptom management, a client-centred view of anxiety explores the deeper layers of your experience.

***What triggers your anxiety?

***How does it affect your daily life, your sense of self, and your relationships?

By answering these questions, therapy becomes a collaborative process where you are an active participant in your journey to healing.

Attachment and Existential Theory

Attachment theory explores how your early relationships may influence your anxiety. If you’ve experienced insecure attachments in childhood—whether through abandonment, inconsistency, or emotional neglect—these patterns can shape how you relate to others and experience anxiety in adulthood. By exploring these attachment wounds, you can begin to heal past traumas and build more secure, supportive relationships, which can significantly reduce the stress of anxiety.

The Path to Healing.

Healing from anxiety is not an overnight process, but with a client-centred, integrative approach, you can make meaningful strides toward regaining control over your life. You are not defined by your anxiety, so by understanding and addressing the thoughts, emotions, and relational patterns contributing to your distress, you can develop the tools and insights needed to overcome it. Through this process, you’ll rediscover a sense of peace, self-compassion, and resilience—ultimately allowing you to live life with greater ease and fulfilment.

What Can I Expect From my First Session?

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We'll discuss what brings you to counselling and how we can work together towards your goals.

We will progress at a pace which is comfortable for you. You are in control.

A trusting, therapeutic relationship is the foundation towards growth and transformation.

What is Supervision?

What is Counselling Supervision?

Supervisors are fully trained to review work with counsellors. Professional counsellors pay fees for this professional service.  This work incorporates the ensuring of ethical practises with councillors with their clients, as well as a counsellor’s other areas of professional and personal development. Supervision is a highly professional service without being a managerial role - it is a highly correct practice. The supervisor acts as a consultant. Some counsellors also use group supervision, in which several professional counsellors will confer on each other’s work adhering to boundaries of confidentiality. For more information, visit readywhenyouare.online

Who needs supervision?

Most professional bodies in the UK such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP, 2018) require their members to undertake supervision - it is viewed as an ethical imperative.

A client who encounters a therapist/counsellor without engaging in supervision should probably consider carefully whether they wish to work with that therapist/counsellor. A counsellor engaging in supervision should provide peace of mind to a client, with knowledge that they are being supported with their best interests at the heart of the matter.

Why is counselling supervision needed?

Supervision exists for two reasons:

1, to protect clients, and

2, to improve the ability of counsellors to provide value for their clients.

Supervision protects clients by involving an impartial third party in the work of counsellor and client. This helps to reduce the risk of serious oversight and assisting the counsellor concerned to reflect on their own feelings, thoughts, behaviour and general approach with the client, Revisiting boundaries and ethical requirements for good practise.

These opportunities to reflect on how they relate to the client, as well as to gain insights from the perspective of another therapist/ counsellor, in a way of adding value to the service counsellors provide to their clients.

*In this respect, supervision is somewhat analogous to peer review in the publishing process: few professional scientists would expect to be able to publish their results without peer review, and the quality of the scientific literature is undoubtedly better than it would be without the positive influence of the peer review process.

What does supervision mean for confidentiality?

The practice of supervision means that many details provided by clients are shared with people other than the counsellor. However, confidentiality is still safeguarded because:

1, Individually identifying information (such as full name) is not revealed, and

2, information shared in supervision is itself protected under a contract of confidentiality and normally may not be shared outside the supervision relationship.

In other words, while some client details are shared within the supervision relationship, these are not traceable back to the specific individual client, and they do not normally pass beyond the supervision relationship (it is possible that a supervisor might bring supervisees client information to their supervisor if for some reason they are struggling with the supervisee).

If you have doubts or questions about counselling supervision.

Although supervision should be implemented in an ethically rigorous way that will serve to protect the interests of clients, a client may well have questions about their own counsellor's supervision arrangements. A client has every right to ask how their counsellor is supervised, and any counsellor/ psychotherapist should be able to provide details of their supervision arrangements, such as the nature of the supervision relationship and the number of hours spent in supervision either by month or relative to the counsellor's caseload.
